Telogen effluvium is heavy shedding from the whole scalp that starts two to four months after a shock to the body: high fever (including dengue), surgery, childbirth, crash dieting or major stress[1]. Hair usually regrows once the trigger has passed.

If shedding continues beyond about six months, a doctor can look for an ongoing cause such as low iron or thyroid disease[2].

What people worry about

Normal ba ang hairfall ko?“Normal ba 'tong hairfall ko?”

Losing about 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. A sudden increase two to four months after a fever, birth, crash diet or big stress is usually telogen effluvium, which often settles on its own. Patches, scarring, pain or very fast loss need a dermatologist.[1][3]
