Finasteride in the Philippines: 1mg vs 5mg, prices and where to buy

Updated 27 Oct 2026Prices checked October 2026HairlineCrownMid-scalp
Quick answer

Finasteride is sold in the Philippines as branded 1mg tablets (Propecia, Stercia) for hair loss and as generic 5mg tablets for prostate enlargement (BPH), and both are prescription medicines. The labelled hair loss dose is 1mg a day[1]. Branded 1mg costs about ₱60 to ₱85 to ₱89 a tablet at Mercury and Watsons, while generic 5mg sells for ₱9 to ₱12 to ₱21.75 to ₱26.

What finasteride does

Finasteride blocks type II 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme that turns testosterone into DHT. DHT is the hormone that slowly shrinks scalp follicles in male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). Less DHT means the shrinking slows or stops[1].

In the two-year trials that led to approval, 83% of men on finasteride 1mg had no further loss by hair count, against 28% on placebo[2]. It works best on the crown and mid-scalp, and it works only while you keep taking it. If you stop, the label says the gains are lost within about 12 months[1].

Community shorthand you will see: fin is finasteride, dut is dutasteride, sides are side effects, and MWF means Monday, Wednesday, Friday dosing.

5mg vs 1mg: two products, one molecule

Most "finasteride 5mg" searches in the Philippines are about the prostate, not hair. Finasteride 5mg (the original brand is Proscar) is labelled for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), an enlarged prostate in older men[3]. Finasteride 1mg (Propecia, and locally Stercia) is labelled for male pattern hair loss[1].

How the two strengths differ

The price gap is why many Filipino men buy the 5mg tablet for hair. A 5mg tablet is five times the labelled hair loss dose. Both labels also warn that women who are or may become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken tablets, because the drug can affect a male fetus[1]. That matters in any home where tablets are split.

Where to buy finasteride in the Philippines

Mercury Drug and Watsons are the accountable channels for branded 1mg. Generika, TGP and small botikas carry generic 5mg. Prices vary even inside one chain: one user found the same TGP Fisteride tablet at ₱20 to ₱45 at two branches[9].

Telehealth brands that prescribe finasteride

Four online brands sell finasteride after an online assessment. They cost more than the pharmacy route and include a consult and delivery. Reported prices: GoRocky ₱2,100 in a 2024 ad[16], Dima ₱1,500 for 30 tablets per a third-party guide[17], and Dailys ₱2,997 for oral minoxidil plus finasteride on its own site[18]. &you does not list a hair price on its homepage[19]. Side effects in one paragraph

In the 1mg trials, decreased libido was reported by 1.8% of men on finasteride against 1.3% on placebo, and erectile dysfunction (ED, trouble getting or keeping an erection) by 1.3% against 0.7%[1]. Most cases resolved after stopping, and many resolved while men kept taking it[1]. The label also lists rarer reports of breast tenderness, depression and persistent sexual problems after stopping. Read the full finasteride side effects guide, including fertility and mood, or the side effects hub.

Finasteride lowers PSA, a blood test used to screen for prostate cancer, by about half[1]. Tell any doctor ordering a PSA test that you take it.

Who should not take it

  • Women who are or may become pregnant. Finasteride can affect the genitals of a male fetus, so it is not used and tablets should not be handled when crushed or broken[1].
  • Children. It is not indicated for children[1].
  • Men with liver problems or prostate symptoms. Tell the doctor first, because finasteride is processed by the liver and changes PSA readings[1].
  • Men trying for a baby. Discuss timing with a doctor; see finasteride and fertility.

A dermatologist can also confirm the diagnosis. Diffuse shedding after a fever or crash diet is often telogen effluvium, which finasteride does not treat. Patchy loss may be alopecia areata. Try the Norwood self-check first if you are unsure where you are.

How long before it works

The label says it can take 3 months or more before you see a benefit[1]. Most dermatologists judge regrowth at about 12 months. Many men pair it with topical minoxidil; see minoxidil vs finasteride. If oral side effects are a concern, topical finasteride is the usual next step, and dutasteride is the stronger option some derms use when finasteride is not enough. Questions people ask

Can I buy finasteride without a prescription in the Philippines?

Finasteride is a prescription medicine, and Watsons tags its 1mg SKUs prescription required[4]. Users report some branches sell generic 5mg without one[5], but the rule stands. A derm consult costs about ₱400 to ₱1,000.

Is finasteride 5mg the same as 1mg?

Same molecule, different labelled use. 5mg is labelled for an enlarged prostate[3]; 1mg is the labelled hair loss dose[1]. Ask a doctor which product fits you.

How much is finasteride at Mercury Drug?

Users report Stercia 1mg at ₱60 and Propecia 1mg at ₱85 to ₱89 per tablet at Mercury[10]. Prices change; check at the counter.

Is Stercia the same as Propecia?

Both contain finasteride 1mg and are sold as prescription products at Watsons and Mercury[4]. Stercia is the cheaper of the two in user reports[10].

What happens if I stop finasteride?

DHT returns to its old level and the hair you kept or regrew is usually lost within about 12 months[1]. It is a maintenance treatment.
