Nizoral shampoo and ketoconazole shampoo in the Philippines
Nizoral is a brand of ketoconazole shampoo, an antifungal that treats dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis (seb derm) by cutting down the Malassezia yeast on the scalp[1]. It works best when you lather and leave it on for about five minutes before rinsing, a few times a week[2][3]. Cheaper ketoconazole brands like Dermazole contain the same active ingredient, and it is a scalp treatment first, not a proven regrowth product.
What ketoconazole shampoo actually does
Ketoconazole is an antifungal. On the scalp it targets Malassezia, a yeast that lives on everyone's skin and feeds on oil. In people prone to seborrheic dermatitis, that yeast drives the redness, itch and greasy yellow or white flakes we call balakubak[1]. Lowering the yeast load calms the flaking.
In a large placebo-controlled trial, ketoconazole 2% shampoo cleared scalp seb derm and dandruff in most patients, and using it once a week afterwards kept flakes from coming back better than placebo[4]. A head-to-head trial found ketoconazole 2% and selenium sulfide 2.5% both beat placebo for moderate to severe dandruff[5]. That is why derms in Manila and Cebu reach for these two first.
Seb derm is chronic. It flares in heat, with sweat, with stress and when you skip washes[1]. A good shampoo controls it. It does not end it, so plan for maintenance use, not one bottle and done.
Nizoral vs Dermazole vs Selsun
These are the three names that come up again and again in Filipino dandruff threads[6][7]. Two of them are ketoconazole. One is selenium sulfide, a different active that also slows yeast and skin cell turnover[8].
| Shampoo | Active ingredient | Where people buy it | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nizoral | Ketoconazole 2% (check the label on your pack) | Watsons, Mercury Drug, sachets at drugstores, official stores on Shopee and Lazada | [TODO: price for Nizoral bottle and sachet] | The reference brand. Sachets are the common entry point, and users say even those are getting expensive[6]. |
| Dermazole | Ketoconazole 2% (check the label on your pack) | Drugstores [TODO: confirm which chains stock Dermazole] | [TODO: price for Dermazole bottle] | Same active as Nizoral. Users name it as the cheaper option[7]. |
| Selsun Blue | Selenium sulfide (strength varies by variant) | Drugstores and supermarkets [TODO: confirm chains] | [TODO: price for Selsun Blue bottle] | Useful to rotate with ketoconazole. Can leave a smell and may discolour chemically treated or light hair[8]. |
If the active and the strength match, the brand matters less than how you use it. Users in r/beautytalkph put it plainly: the trick is in the application, not the brand[7]. Some people find one formula drying or harsh and another fine. That is the hiyang factor, and the only way to learn it is a few weeks of consistent use.
How to use it: the babad method
Most people who say Nizoral did nothing used it like regular shampoo: lather, rinse, done in 30 seconds. Antifungal shampoos need contact time. The American Academy of Dermatology advises leaving dandruff shampoo on the scalp for about five minutes before rinsing[2].
- Wet your hair and scalp fully. If your scalp is very oily, wash first with your regular shampoo so the medicated one reaches skin, not sebum.
- Apply the ketoconazole shampoo to the scalp, not the lengths. Massage it in with your fingertips, not your nails.
- Babad: leave it on for about five minutes[2]. Brush your teeth or wash your body while you wait.
- Banlaw: rinse well. Use conditioner on the ends if the shampoo feels drying.
- Repeat on a schedule. The 2% label directs use twice a week for four weeks, at least three days apart, then as needed to keep it controlled[3].
Fake Nizoral on Shopee: how to check
Shopee buyers regularly post photos of two Nizoral bottles side by side and ask which one is legit because the fonts and colours differ[10]. Counterfeit cosmetics and medicines are a real risk on open marketplaces, and the PH FDA has issued advisories against unregistered hair products sold online[11].
- Buy from Watsons, Mercury Drug or the brand's official store on Shopee or Lazada, not a random reseller with a price far below the drugstore.
- Check the registration number on the box against the FDA Philippines verification portal[12].
- Look for an intact seal, a printed batch number and an expiry date that matches between box and bottle.
- Compare against a pack bought at a pharmacy. Blurry print, misspellings and a runny or odd-smelling shampoo are red flags.
The same rules apply to every hair product you buy online. Our legit check guide walks through the portal step by step.
Does ketoconazole shampoo help hair loss?
This is why men search Nizoral alongside minoxidil. A small study found that long-term ketoconazole 2% shampoo improved hair density and the share of growing hairs in men with androgenetic alopecia, roughly in line with a 2% minoxidil arm[13]. It is a small, older study. It has not been confirmed by large trials, and no regulator lists ketoconazole as a hair loss treatment.
The honest read: ketoconazole is a sensible add-on, especially if you also have flakes or itch, because an inflamed scalp is a worse place to grow hair. It is not a substitute for the treatments with strong evidence, minoxidil and finasteride. Our hair loss treatment guide shows where it sits on the ladder.
If you use topical minoxidil, a medicated wash two or three times a week can also help with the flaking some people get from liquid minoxidil. Users on r/PhHairloss describe initial dandruff and itch when starting Regroe[14]. Regroe 5% costs ₱600 to ₱900 per bottle, so it is worth protecting the scalp you are spending on.
Side effects and when to see a derm
Ketoconazole shampoo is usually well tolerated. The label lists scalp irritation, itching, dryness and changes in hair texture as possible effects[3]. Keep it out of your eyes. Stop if you get a rash or swelling. See our side effects hub for how scalp reactions differ from treatment shedding.
See a PDS board-certified dermatologist if flakes reach your eyebrows, sideburns or ears, if the scalp is weeping or painful, or if four weeks of correct use change nothing[1]. One Reddit poster's flakes spread to her brows after trying Sunsilk, Clear and Head and Shoulders[6]. That pattern needs a diagnosis, not another shampoo. A consult costs ₱400 to ₱1,000, and psoriasis, contact dermatitis and tinea can all look like stubborn dandruff. Find one through the Philippine Dermatological Society or book online via NowServing.

Questions people ask
Is Nizoral shampoo good for hair loss?
It treats dandruff and seb derm well[4]. One small study suggested it may help pattern hair loss as an add-on[13], but the evidence is thin. Use it alongside proven treatments like minoxidil, not instead of them.
How long should I leave Nizoral on my scalp?
About five minutes before rinsing, according to the American Academy of Dermatology's dandruff advice[2].
How often should I use ketoconazole shampoo?
The 2% label directs twice a week for four weeks, at least three days apart, then as needed for control[3]. Use a gentle regular shampoo on other days.
Is Dermazole the same as Nizoral?
Both are ketoconazole shampoos. Check the strength on the label of the pack you buy. With the same active and strength, consistent use and contact time matter more than the brand[7].
Can I use Nizoral every day?
The label schedule is a few times a week, not daily[3]. Daily use can dry the scalp. If you need to wash daily in the heat, alternate with a mild shampoo.
How do I know if my Nizoral from Shopee is fake?
Buy from the official store, check the FDA registration number on the verification portal[12], and compare seals, batch and expiry against a pharmacy-bought pack. Shopee buyers report bottles with different fonts[10].
