Hair loss treatment in the Philippines: the full ladder, from shampoo to transplant

Updated 27 Oct 2026Prices checked October 2026HairlineCrownMid-scalpWhole scalpScalp skin
Quick answer

For pattern hair loss, the treatments with the strongest evidence are topical minoxidil and finasteride, usually started together and kept up long term[1][2]. Shampoos, supplements and clinic add-ons like PRP sit below them, and a transplant moves existing hair but does not stop future loss. Get the cause confirmed first: a PDS board-certified dermatologist consult costs ₱400 to ₱1,000.

Start with the cause, not the product

Hair loss is a symptom with many causes. Pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) is the most common, but shedding after illness, childbirth or stress (telogen effluvium), patchy alopecia areata, thyroid problems, low iron and scalp conditions like seb derm all look different and need different fixes[3]. Minoxidil will not fix a thyroid problem. Finasteride does nothing for alopecia areata.

Men with a receding hairline or thinning crown usually have pattern loss. Women more often notice a widening part or general manipis, and sudden heavy lagas is often telogen effluvium[4]. Use the Norwood check below to place yourself, then read the ladder from the bottom up.

Step 1: scalp care and shampoo

Treat flakes, itch and oil first. Ketoconazole shampoo controls seb derm[15] and may help hair density slightly as an add-on[5]. No shampoo regrows a receding hairline. See the best shampoo for hair loss.

Step 2: topical minoxidil

Regroe 5% from Watsons or Mercury Drug is the usual starting point. In a 48-week trial, 5% beat both 2% and placebo[1]. Expect a temporary shed and give it at least four months[16]. Details, prices and pet safety are in our minoxidil guide.

Step 3: finasteride (men)

Finasteride blocks the conversion of testosterone to DHT, the hormone that shrinks scalp follicles in pattern loss. The labelled hair loss dose is 1mg daily[17]. In two-year trials it slowed loss and increased hair counts compared with placebo[2]. Sexual side effects were reported by a small minority of men in trials[17]. ED means erectile dysfunction, trouble getting or keeping an erection. Read finasteride side effects before deciding, and see minoxidil vs finasteride for why they are often combined.

Step 4: oral and second-line options

Low-dose oral minoxidil is prescribed off-label, and a large safety study described body hair growth as its most common effect[7]. Topical finasteride sprays reduce whole-body exposure compared with tablets[8]. Dutasteride blocks more DHT than finasteride[9]. All three need a prescription and a doctor who knows your history.

Step 5: PRP, exosomes and microneedling

These are clinic procedures. PRP showed regrowth against placebo in a small trial[10], and users on r/PhHairloss see it as an expensive add-on to finasteride and minoxidil, not a replacement[19]. Exosome evidence is early[11], and we found no Filipino first-hand reports of exosome hair results. Microneedling helped when combined with minoxidil in a small study[12].

Step 6: hair transplant

A transplant moves follicles from the back of the head to thinning areas[13]. It does not stop the native hair around the grafts from thinning, so most surgeons expect you to stay on medication. Users report ₱160,000 to ₱200,000 for about 3,000 grafts in the PH[14]. See hair transplant cost and hair transplant clinics.

Maintenance: what happens when you stop

Minoxidil and finasteride work only while you use them. The minoxidil label says continued use is needed to keep regrowth[16], and finasteride's benefit fades within about a year of stopping[17]. Users on r/PhHairloss call this maintenance na pala. Treat it like a phone plan: a monthly cost you keep paying.

Stop and you lose it“Babalik ba sa kalbo pag tinigil?”

Yes, for pattern hair loss both finasteride and minoxidil work only while you use them. Hair gained is usually lost over several months after stopping. That is why the lifetime cost matters more than the first bottle.[17][16][20]

That is why monthly cost matters more than the first bottle. Stercia 1mg plus Regroe 5% runs ₱1,800 a month plus ₱600 to ₱900 a month. Use the cost calculator on our prices page to compare branded, generic and telehealth routes over years, not months.

Clinics: derms vs hard-sell hair centres

The Philippines has two very different kinds of hair clinic. One is the board-certified dermatologist, often at a hospital, who diagnoses, may order blood tests and prescribes standard medicines. The other is the hair centre that runs free consults and sells treatment packages.

Svenson is the name that comes up most. Users on r/PhHairloss report free consults that turned into packages of ₱46,000 to ₱60,000, with no lab tests and non-doctor trichologists in white coats[21]. Others report total spending of ₱50,000 to ₱120,000 with little result[22]. These are user reports, not audited figures. One user reports some baby hairs after a large total spend[23].

Upselling is not limited to hair centres. One user reports a Manila derm diagnosed by eye and pushed shampoo, minoxidil and serum sold in his own clinic[24]. A Clinique de Paris consult ended in a ₱9,250 box of the clinic's own topical[25]. Users say they want a doctor who does not sell products.

Clinic hard sells“I wasted 120k in Svenson and nothing happened.”

Several users describe free consults that turn into large packages with no lab tests and no doctor. A PDS board-certified dermatologist can diagnose the cause, order tests and prescribe first-line treatment for the price of a consult. Ask who will examine you and whether they are a licensed physician before paying.[22][21][26]

  • Ask if the person examining you is a PDS board-certified dermatologist. Check on the PDS site.
  • A derm consult costs ₱400 to ₱1,000, or nothing with an HMO at an accredited hospital, users report[26][27].
  • Ask for a diagnosis before a product. Ask what is in any in-house bottle and whether a pharmacy brand works the same.
  • Walk away from same-day package pressure. You can always come back.

Questions people ask

What is the most effective hair loss treatment?

For pattern hair loss, minoxidil and finasteride have the strongest evidence[1][2]. Many dermatologists combine them. A transplant can restore density but still needs medication to protect native hair[13].

Is there a permanent hair loss treatment?

No medicine works permanently after you stop it[16][17]. Transplanted follicles usually keep growing, but the hair around them can keep thinning without treatment[13].

How much does hair loss treatment cost in the Philippines?

Regroe 5% is about ₱600 to ₱900 a month. Branded finasteride 1mg runs ₱1,800 a month to ₱2,550 to ₱2,670 a month. PRP is about ₱10,000 a session and a transplant about ₱160,000 to ₱200,000. See prices.

Should I see a dermatologist or go to Svenson?

Users on r/PhHairloss recommend a PDS board-certified dermatologist, who costs ₱400 to ₱1,000 per consult[26], and report expensive packages at Svenson[21]. See clinics.

Can hair grow back after hair loss?

Often, if follicles are still alive. Shedding from stress or childbirth usually recovers[4]. Pattern loss can partly regrow with minoxidil and finasteride, best when started early[1][2].
