Minoxidil in the Philippines: where to buy, prices, the shed and safety

Quick answer

Topical minoxidil 5% is sold without a prescription in the Philippines, mainly as Regroe at Watsons and Mercury Drug for about ₱600 to ₱900 per 60ml bottle, which lasts about a month at the labelled dose. The 6% strength is tagged prescription-required[1], and oral minoxidil needs a doctor. Expect extra shedding in the first weeks and judge results at about four months[2].

What minoxidil does and how well it works

Minoxidil is a topical solution or foam you apply to the scalp. It lengthens the growth phase of hair follicles and enlarges follicles that have started to shrink. It does not block the hormone DHT, which is why it is often paired with finasteride in men.

In a 48-week trial in men, 5% minoxidil produced 45% more regrowth than the 2% strength, and both beat placebo[3]. Results are usually best at the crown and mid-scalp. A receding hairline responds less reliably, though many users still apply it there. The labelled use is 1ml twice a day on a dry scalp[2].

Minoxidil works only while you use it. The product label states that continued use is needed to keep regrowth[2]. Users on r/deinfluencingPH compare it to maintenance blood pressure medicine for the elderly[4]. Factor that into your budget before you start.

Regroe 120ml at ₱2,250 works out cheaper per month. One user reports a bottle lasts about three months[6]. The cheapest reliable route for most people is Regroe 5% bought at a pharmacy. Is it fake?“Fake ba yung Kirkland sa Shopee?”

Fakes are a real risk, and the PH FDA has issued advisories against unregistered minoxidil and finasteride products. Check the product on the FDA verification portal, buy from a pharmacy or an official store, and inspect seals, batch and expiry. The home bleach test cannot rule out a diluted fake.[8][9][10]

The shed: why your hair falls more at first

This is the part that makes people quit. In the first weeks, many users see more hair in the shower drain, on the pillow and on the suklay. The label lists temporary shedding as expected[2]. Minoxidil pushes resting hairs out so new growing hairs can replace them. Ganyan talaga ang lagas sa umpisa.

The minoxidil shed, month by month

Drag or tap a month

Month 2

Peak worry

This is the month most people quit. "Ganyan ang lagas every suklay" is a common post. Shedding usually settles over the next weeks. Patches or pain are not part of a normal shed; see a derm.

The label says you may need to use it for at least four months before seeing results[2]. A user switching from Regroe to Kirkland reports his doctor told him to expect three to four months[12]. Some people have a second, smaller shed later. Take a photo in the same light every month so you are comparing pictures, not memories.

See a dermatologist if shedding comes with patches, scalp pain, redness or scaling, or if it is still heavy after about four months. Those signs point to something other than a normal minoxidil shed. Our is my hairfall normal check and side effects hub help you sort it out.

The minoxidil dread shed“Bakit mas lumalagas nung nag-minox ako?”

Extra shedding in the first weeks of minoxidil is common and listed on the product label. Minoxidil pushes resting hairs out so new growth can start. Most people judge results at about 4 months, not at month 2. Shedding that is patchy, painful or lasts beyond that window is a reason to see a dermatologist.[2][3][12]

Foam vs liquid in Philippine heat

The most common texture complaint is greasy, slow-drying hair. A Regroe user describes it as hair that looks like it has baby oil on it[13]. In Manila humidity, with a helmet or a long commute, that matters.

  • Liquid spreads easily through short hair and is what Regroe sells. Most liquids use propylene glycol, a common cause of itch and flaking[14].
  • Foam dries faster and contains no propylene glycol. A placebo-controlled trial confirmed 5% foam works in men[15]. In the PH it mostly arrives as imported Kirkland foam at about ₱800 to ₱900 a month, with the fake risk that brings.
  • Timing: apply at night and in the morning before you shower and style, or after bathing once the scalp is fully dry. Let it dry before wearing a helmet or cap.

If the scalp itches and flakes, a ketoconazole wash a few times a week can help. See Nizoral and ketoconazole shampoo. Persistent itch, redness or swelling can be an allergy and needs a doctor.

Minoxidil for women

Minoxidil is the main over-the-counter option for female pattern hair loss, the slow manipis look at the part line[16]. In a trial in women, 5% foam once a day worked as well as 2% solution twice a day[17]. Once a day is easier to keep up with, and easier on your hair routine.

Women's labels warn against use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and list unwanted facial hair as a possible effect[18]. If you have PCOS, irregular periods or very sudden lagas, see a dermatologist first because the cause shapes the treatment. Women prescribed minoxidil often hesitate over lifetime cost[19], so ask your derm about the cheapest form that fits your budget. Our female hair loss guide covers the full picture.

Minoxidil and pets

Topical minoxidil is toxic to cats and dogs, and cats are especially sensitive. Veterinary reports describe serious poisoning in cats from small exposures, including licking an owner's treated skin or a pillow[20]. ASPCA Animal Poison Control lists minoxidil as a pet hazard[21].

  • Apply away from pets and let it dry fully before cuddling them.
  • Wash your hands right after applying.
  • Keep pets off your pillow and bed, and change pillowcases often.
  • Store bottles closed and out of reach. Wipe spills.
  • If a pet licks it or acts weak, drools or vomits, go to a vet immediately.
Minoxidil and pets“Delikado ba sa pusa ang minoxidil?”

Cats are highly sensitive to minoxidil, and small exposures from licking treated skin, pillows or spills have caused serious poisoning. Let it dry fully, wash your hands, keep pets off your pillow and store it out of reach. If a pet may have been exposed, go to a vet immediately.[20][21][22]

Side effects and myths

Topical side effects are mostly scalp itch, dryness and flaking, plus the temporary shed[2]. Stop and see a doctor for chest pain, a racing heartbeat, dizziness or sudden swelling of the face or hands, which the label lists as warning signs[2]. Minoxidil does not cause infertility. Users on r/beautyph have corrected that nakakabaog myth[23]. Oral minoxidil has a different profile, including body hair and fluid retention[24].

If minoxidil alone is not holding your hairline or crown, the usual next step is adding finasteride. Compare them in minoxidil vs finasteride and see the full ladder in hair loss treatment. For a prescription, a dermatologist consult costs ₱400 to ₱1,000, or compare online hair loss doctors.
