Hair loss treatment for women in the Philippines
For thinning on top with a widening part (female pattern hair loss), topical minoxidil is the first-line treatment, and Regroe is sold at Watsons and Mercury Drug[1][2]. If PCOS is behind it, a doctor may add an anti-androgen such as spironolactone[3]. Sudden shedding after giving birth or an illness usually settles without treatment[4].
Hairfall in women has more possible causes than in men, and the right treatment depends on which one you have. A widening part needs a different plan from a postpartum shed, and both are different from walis tambo ends after a rebond. Start by working out which one is yours. If you are not sure, take the hairfall self-check first.
Which type of hairfall is it?
| What you notice | Likely cause | First step |
|---|---|---|
| Part getting wider, less volume on top, hairline intact | Female pattern hair loss[1] | Topical minoxidil, derm visit |
| Thinning on top plus irregular periods, acne or chin hair | PCOS-related thinning[5] | OB-GYN or endo plus derm |
| Sudden all-over shedding 2 to 4 months after a trigger | Telogen effluvium[4] | Wait it out; check iron if it lasts |
| Shedding a few months after giving birth | Postpartum hair loss[6] | Usually settles on its own |
| Short broken pieces, frizz, after rebond or bleach | Chemical or heat damage[7] | Stop the cause, gentler care |
| Round smooth patches | Alopecia areata[8] | Dermatologist |
Minoxidil for women
Topical minoxidil is the best-studied hair loss treatment for women. In a 48-week randomized trial, both 5% and 2% solutions grew more hair than placebo in women with pattern hair loss[2]. Women's products abroad are labelled as 2% solution twice daily or 5% foam once daily[9]. Your derm will say which strength and form suits you.
In the PH, Regroe is the brand most women find at Watsons and Mercury Drug. Expect a shed in the first weeks, which the label lists and which means the treatment is pushing out resting hairs[10]. Results are judged at about four months or later. See how long minoxidil takes and the full minoxidil guide.

- Unwanted facial hair is a known side effect, more often with the stronger solution[2]. Applying carefully and washing hands helps. Oral minoxidil causes it more often than topical[11].
- Itch and flaking can come from the liquid base. A foam may suit sensitive scalps better[12].
- It is maintenance. Gains fade over months after stopping[10]. "Pag nag stop ka wala na din" is accurate for pattern loss.
Minoxidil and pets: cats especially
Many women hold back from minoxidil because of their cats, and the worry is reasonable. Cats are highly sensitive to minoxidil, and small exposures from licking treated skin, pillowcases or spills have caused serious poisoning[14][15]. If you live with cats, let it dry fully, wash your hands, keep pets off your pillow and store the bottle out of reach. If a pet may have been exposed, go to a vet immediately. PCOS and hair loss
PCOS raises androgen levels, which can thin hair on top in a female pattern[1]. International guidelines treat hair loss as one of the features of PCOS and recommend care that looks at the whole condition, not just the scalp[5]. In practice that means an OB-GYN or endocrinologist plus a dermatologist. Read the PCOS hair loss entry.
Saw palmetto has weak evidence for hair[19]; see our saw palmetto guide before spending on it.
Spironolactone
Spironolactone is a diuretic that also blocks androgen effects. An Australian study found oral anti-androgens, including spironolactone, stopped progression or improved hair in many women with pattern loss[3]. Its use for hair is off-label. It is not used in pregnancy, and doctors monitor potassium and blood pressure[20]. Prescribing is uneven in the PH: one woman's derm gave low-dose finasteride, another's "won't prescribe fin or spiro"[21]. See spironolactone.
Postpartum hairfall
After birth, falling oestrogen pushes many hairs into shedding at once. It usually starts a few months after delivery, and most mothers have normal fullness again by their baby's first birthday[6]. In r/nanayconfessions, peers say it subsides by six to nine months, though one mom was still shedding at 15 months[23]. Our postpartum hair loss guide has the month-by-month view and when to worry.
Rebond, bleach and tight styles
Rebonding, bleaching and heat weaken the hair shaft so it snaps. Tight ponytails and braids pull on follicles at the hairline and can cause traction alopecia, which can become permanent if it continues[7]. A long r/deinfluencingPH thread blamed rebond for thinning and walis tambo breakage[24]. Breakage does not need minoxidil. It needs fewer chemical sessions, less heat and looser styles. Check the ends of your strands: no white bulb means breakage. See breakage vs shedding.
Tests, doctors and costs
A PDS board-certified dermatologist can tell these causes apart and order blood tests. Commenters often suggest thyroid, ferritin and vitamin D checks[25], and low iron and vitamin D are linked to hair loss[26]. A consult costs ₱400 to ₱1,000, or nothing with an HMO at many accredited hospitals[27].

Questions people ask
What is the best hair loss treatment for women?
For female pattern hair loss, topical minoxidil has the strongest evidence[2]. Women with PCOS or high androgens may also be offered spironolactone[3]. The right choice depends on the cause, so a derm visit helps.
Can women use minoxidil?
Yes. Both 2% and 5% minoxidil beat placebo for women in a randomized trial[2]. Unwanted facial hair is the side effect to watch, and pets, especially cats, must be kept away from it[14].
Does PCOS hair loss grow back?
Thinning can stop and partly improve with treatment of the hormonal cause plus minoxidil, but it takes months[3][5]. Care usually involves an OB-GYN or endo and a derm.
Is minoxidil safe if I have cats?
Cats are very sensitive to minoxidil and exposures have caused serious poisoning[14]. Let it dry fully, wash hands, keep cats off your pillow and store it out of reach. Some women choose another option for this reason.
Can rebond cause hair loss?
Rebonding mostly causes breakage, where hair snaps along the shaft[7]. Repeated chemical damage and tight styles can lead to lasting thinning, so space out treatments.
