How to read side effect numbers

Two kinds of evidence appear on this page. Trial rates come from studies that compare a drug with placebo, so you can see how much is caused by the drug itself. Finasteride's libido figure of 1.8% only means something next to the 1.3% on placebo[2]. Post-approval reports come from people who report problems after a drug is on the market. They show something has happened, but not how often.

Community reports from r/PhHairloss and r/beautyph are the third kind. They tell you what real Filipinos experience and worry about, but a thread full of horror stories is not a rate. People with problems post more than people without. Expecting side effects also makes people more likely to notice them[8].

Smaller side effects people ask about

  • Itch and flaking from minoxidil. Users on r/PhHairloss report dandruff and itch at the start[37]. Liquids with propylene glycol irritate more; foam often helps. Persistent redness can be an allergy or seb derm; see dandruff and hair loss.
  • Greasy look in PH heat. Users compare liquid minoxidil to baby oil[38]. Foam or applying at night are common fixes.
  • Facial puffiness on oral minoxidil. Reported by Filipino users and cleared after stopping[39].
  • Testicular pain or sleepiness on finasteride. Testicular pain is on the label[2]. Report it to a doctor rather than changing the dose yourself[3].
  • PSA test changes. Finasteride and dutasteride lower PSA by about half[2]. Tell any doctor ordering one.

Many of these are not side effects at all but timing. Shedding a few weeks into minoxidil is expected. Shedding two to four months after a fever, childbirth or crash diet is usually telogen effluvium, unrelated to any product[35]. Checking the timeline before blaming the bottle saves a lot of worry and money.

Fear of fakes and fear of side effects

In Filipino threads the two biggest fears feed each other. Users who shed on oral minoxidil often blame fake tablets[40], and users who feel off on finasteride wonder whether the strip from the botika was real[13]. Sometimes they are right. Often the drug itself, the normal shed or plain bad timing is the cause.

The fix is to remove one variable. Buy from a pharmacy or official store and check the product on the FDA portal, as shown in is it legit?. Then, if a side effect appears, you and your doctor know it is the drug and can decide what to do next.

What to do if something feels wrong

  1. Write down what you feel and when it started.
  2. Do not change doses or split tablets on your own. Community self-dosing makes it hard to tell what is causing what.
  3. See a doctor. A dermatologist consult costs about ₱400 to ₱1,000, often free with an HMO at an accredited hospital[32]. You can find one through the Philippine Dermatological Society or book online through NowServing.
  4. Stop at once and get help for mood changes or thoughts of self-harm, a breast lump, chest pain, fainting or sudden swelling.
  5. If a pet may have licked minoxidil, go to a vet immediately[26].
