Is it legit? How to check minoxidil, finasteride and Nizoral in the Philippines

Updated 27 Oct 2026Prices checked October 2026HairlineCrownScalp skin
Quick answer

Look the product up on the FDA Philippines verification portal, then check the box for an intact seal, a batch or lot number, an expiry date and a registration number that matches the portal. Buy from a pharmacy or an official brand store, because the home bleach test cannot rule out a diluted fake[1]. The PH FDA has issued advisories against unregistered minoxidil and finasteride products[2].

"Why buy medicine on Shopee? Lots of fakes there" sums up the top fear in Filipino hair loss threads[3]. "Fake ba yung Kirkland sa Shopee?" is the version you hear most. Fakes are a real risk, and the fear also hides a second problem: users who shed or feel off often blame fake stock when the drug itself is the cause[4]. A proper check settles both questions.

Step 1: Look it up on the FDA portal

FDA Philippines runs a public verification portal where you can search registered products[5]. In our research, no Filipino user described successfully using it, and one doubted a seller's posted FDA claim because "why can't it be searched?"[6]. That instinct is right.

  1. Open the FDA verification portal.
  2. Search by brand name (for example Regroe or Stercia) or by generic name (minoxidil, finasteride, ketoconazole).
  3. Find the registration number printed on the box. Drug registrations usually start with "DR-".
  4. Check that the number, brand, strength and company on the portal match the box in your hand.
  5. No match, or the seller cannot show a number? Treat it as unregistered.

Step 2: Check the box and seal

  • Seal: unbroken shrink wrap or a tamper seal on the cap. Users on r/PhHairloss reject anything with a broken seal[7].
  • Batch or lot number and expiry: printed or embossed, not a sticker. Both should appear on the box and the bottle or strip, and match.
  • Printing: compare fonts, spacing and colour with a pharmacy-bought pack. Users do this side by side[7].
  • Company details: manufacturer, importer or distributor with a PH address.
  • Leaflet: a package insert for drugs. Missing leaflets are a warning sign.
  • Liquid: minoxidil should be clear. Cloudiness, sediment or an odd smell is a reason to stop and return it.

Step 3: Check batch and expiry with the seller

An official store or pharmacy can tell you where the stock came from. Ask for the batch number before buying online. If the batch on arrival differs from the photo, or the expiry is close, return it. For tablets, every strip should show the drug name, strength, batch and expiry. Loose or unlabelled tablets cannot be checked at all, which is the main problem with oral minoxidil from resellers selling at about ₱1,200 to ₱1,999 for 100[8]. See the oral minoxidil guide.

Prescription products add one more check. Finasteride 1mg sold properly carries a prescription requirement, which Watsons shows on its listings[9]. A seller who ships prescription tablets with no questions asked is not proof of a fake, but it is a sign the chain of custody is loose.

Why the bleach test is unreliable

The home bleach test mixes a few drops of minoxidil with bleach and watches for a colour change. Filipino users use it as a legit check[7]. The problem: a diluted fake that contains some minoxidil can still change colour. A warning on r/tressless about counterfeit Kirkland makes exactly this point[1]. The test cannot tell you the strength, and strength is what matters. Mixing bleach with other chemicals can also release harmful fumes.

A note on community seller lists: the most-shared "where to get legit minoxidil" directory on r/PhHairloss is maintained by an account that posts seller discount codes[10]. It may still point to good sellers, but it is not neutral.

FDA advisories on hair products

The PH FDA actively warns against unregistered hair products. Advisory No. 2024-0575-A covers an unregistered "Hair Tonic 20 Minoxidil + Finasteride"[2]. In 2026 the FDA warned the public about another unregistered hair regrowth product[11]. Products named in an advisory have not passed FDA evaluation, so their contents and safety are unknown. Search fda.gov.ph for the product name before buying any imported tonic or combo.

Nizoral and other shampoo fakes

Fakes are not only a drug problem. Shopee buyers ask which Nizoral is legit because bottle fonts and labels differ between listings[12]. The same checks apply: portal lookup, seal, batch and expiry, and an official store. Sachets and bottles from Watsons and Mercury are the safe baseline. More in the ketoconazole shampoo guide.

If you think you bought a fake

  1. Stop using it and keep the box, receipt and listing screenshot.
  2. Ask the platform for a refund under its counterfeit policy.
  3. Report the product to FDA Philippines through fda.gov.ph.
  4. If you had a reaction, see a doctor and bring the product.
  5. Restart with a product bought from a pharmacy, and judge results from that start date.

Questions people ask

How do I check if a product is FDA registered in the Philippines?

Search the brand or generic name on the FDA verification portal[5] and match the registration number, strength and company with the box.

Does the bleach test prove minoxidil is real?

No. A diluted fake can still change colour, so the test cannot confirm strength[1].

Is Kirkland minoxidil on Shopee legit?

Some may be genuine imports, but registration is often unclear and fakes circulate[1]. Prefer official stores, check the batch and seal, and look the product up on the FDA portal.

How can I tell if Nizoral is fake?

Shopee buyers report listings with different fonts and labels[12]. Buy from Watsons, Mercury or the official store, and check the seal, batch and expiry.

Has the FDA warned about fake minoxidil?

Yes. Advisory 2024-0575-A warns against an unregistered minoxidil and finasteride hair tonic[2], and a 2026 advisory covers another hair regrowth product[11].
