Regroe vs Kirkland minoxidil: price, texture and the fake risk in the Philippines
Regroe and Kirkland 5% contain the same active ingredient at the same strength, so they should work the same if both are genuine[1]. Regroe is sold by Watsons and Mercury Drug for about ₱600 to ₱900 per 60ml, while Kirkland arrives through Shopee resellers and carries more counterfeit risk[2]. Kirkland foam dries faster in the heat, which is its main real advantage.
The short version
| Regroe 5% | Kirkland 5% | |
|---|---|---|
| Active ingredient | Minoxidil 5% | Minoxidil 5% |
| Forms seen in the PH | Liquid, 60ml and 120ml; 6% liquid (Rx)[3] | Liquid and foam, imported |
| Where to buy | Watsons, Mercury Drug, official online stores | Shopee and Lazada resellers |
| Price | ₱600 to ₱900 per 60ml; ₱2,250 per 120ml | Foam about ₱800 to ₱900 per can; liquid [TODO: price for Kirkland liquid] |
| PH FDA registration | Check the number on the box on the FDA portal | We found no PH FDA registration (see below) |
| Texture | Oily, slow to dry for some users[4] | Foam dries fast; liquid similar to other liquids |
| Fake risk | Low from pharmacies | Higher; counterfeits documented abroad[2] |
Do they work the same?
Yes, if both are genuine 5% minoxidil. The strength is what the trial evidence is built on: in a 48-week study in men, 5% minoxidil produced more regrowth than 2% and placebo[1]. Foam at 5% was separately shown to beat placebo[5]. Neither brand has its own head-to-head trial, and there is no reason to expect a difference in the active ingredient.
Where they differ is the base. Most minoxidil liquids, Regroe included, use propylene glycol and alcohol to dissolve the drug. Propylene glycol is a common cause of itch and contact dermatitis[6]. Foam formulas leave it out, which is why people with itchy scalps often switch.
Texture in Philippine heat
Texture is the most common complaint. One Regroe user asked if it was dry like Kirkland or oily, and replies described hair that looks like it has baby oil on it[4]. Another thread sums up the greasy look as mukha ka pang bagong ligo, like you just stepped out of the shower[8]. Users bothered by it tend to move to foam or quicker-drying formulas[4].
- Office or school with a strict look: foam at night and morning, styled after it dries.
- Long commute or helmet: apply after you arrive, or right after the evening bath.
- Short hair: liquid spreads more easily to the scalp. Longer hair: foam is easier to part and apply.
Is Kirkland minoxidil PH FDA registered?
We found no PH FDA registration for Kirkland minoxidil [TODO: record the date and result of our verification.fda.gov.ph search before publishing]. A secondary review site reports the same finding for Kirkland and Rogaine imports[9]. That site is not independent verification, and listings change, so check the FDA verification portal yourself[10].
Unregistered does not automatically mean fake. Kirkland is a real US product. It means no Philippine regulator has checked the stock you are buying, the seller is often a personal importer, and you have little recourse if the bottle is diluted. The PH FDA has issued advisories against unregistered minoxidil products sold online[11].
Is it fake?“Fake ba yung Kirkland sa Shopee?”
Fakes are a real risk, and the PH FDA has issued advisories against unregistered minoxidil and finasteride products. Check the product on the FDA verification portal, buy from a pharmacy or an official store, and inspect seals, batch and expiry. The home bleach test cannot rule out a diluted fake.[11][12][10]
How to spot fake Kirkland or Regroe
- Buy Regroe from Watsons, Mercury Drug or an official store. For Kirkland, use a seller with a long history and real photos of the batch, not stock images.
- Check seals, batch numbers and expiry dates on both the box and the bottle.
- Compare fonts and colours against a pharmacy pack. Users have caught fakes this way[14].
- Do not rely on the home bleach test. A r/tressless warning notes that diluted fakes can still pass it[2].
- Be wary of prices far below the usual ₱800 to ₱900 for foam.

Regroe 6% vs 5%: is the stronger bottle worth it?
Regroe also sells a 6% liquid, which Watsons tags as prescription required[3]. We found no published trial comparing 6% with 5%. The evidence that stronger is better comes from 5% against 2%[1], and 6% is a small step beyond that. A higher strength can also mean more scalp irritation for some users.
If you are thinking about 6% because 5% did not work, give 5% the full four months first[15], then talk to a doctor. Adding a different medicine usually changes more than adding one percentage point. Users on r/PhHairloss who saw no change after years of minoxidil were mostly pointed to finasteride or dutasteride by peers[16], which are prescription decisions to make with a derm.
Women should not reach for 6% or men's Kirkland without advice. Women's labels use 5% foam once a day[17], and higher strengths raise the chance of unwanted facial hair.
Cost over a year
Regroe 60ml costs ₱600 to ₱900 a month at one bottle a month. Regroe 120ml is ₱2,250 and one user reports it lasts about three months[18], which works out to ₱750 a month. Kirkland foam runs about ₱800 to ₱900 a month. Over twelve months, the gap between them is small next to the cost of stopping and losing what you gained. See the cost calculator for a full comparison.
Which should you buy?
If you want the least risk, buy Regroe 5% from a pharmacy. If the liquid is too greasy or itchy and you accept the import risk, foam is a reasonable switch. If neither works after four or more months[15], the next step is a doctor, not a third brand. Finasteride, topical finasteride or oral minoxidil may be options. A dermatologist consult costs ₱400 to ₱1,000, or compare online hair loss doctors.
