Topical minoxidil keeps follicles in the growth phase longer. In a 48-week trial in men, 5% minoxidil grew more hair than 2% and placebo[1]. The label tells you to expect a few weeks of extra shedding at the start[2]; that is the dread shed, and it is the main reason people quit at month 2.
