How long does minoxidil take to work? A month-by-month timeline

Updated 27 Oct 2026Prices checked October 2026CrownHairlineMid-scalp
Quick answer

Minoxidil usually takes 2 to 4 months to show regrowth, and the label says some people need at least 4 months of twice-daily use before they see results[1]. Many people shed more in the first weeks, which is expected. Full results build over about a year[2].

"Ganyan ang lagas every suklay" is how one Filipino user described the first weeks[3]. The shed is the main reason people quit minoxidil at month two, just before it starts to pay off. This page lays out what usually happens, month by month, so you can tell normal from worrying.

Month 2

Peak worry

This is the month most people quit. "Ganyan ang lagas every suklay" is a common post. Shedding usually settles over the next weeks. Patches or pain are not part of a normal shed; see a derm.

What to expect on topical minoxidil
WhenWhat usually happensWhat to do
Weeks 1 to 2Nothing visible. Some scalp itch or flaking from the liquid[4]Apply to a dry scalp; let it dry fully
Weeks 2 to 8Extra shedding is common; the label warns of temporary hair loss at the start[1]Keep going unless it is patchy or painful
Months 2 to 4Shedding settles; fine, light baby hairs may appear[1]Take photos in the same light every month
Month 4The usual point to judge whether it is working[1]Compare photos, not mirror checks
Months 6 to 12Baby hairs thicken and darken; results build[2]Stay consistent; skipped doses slow progress
After 12 monthsResults plateau; the job becomes keeping what you haveOngoing use maintains it[1]

Why the shed happens

Every hair cycles through growing, resting and falling out. Minoxidil pushes resting hairs out early so new growing hairs can replace them. The result is a burst of shedding a few weeks in, which the product label warns about[1]. Users on r/PhHairloss repeat the line "if you're shedding, it's working", and one user's doctor told them to expect 3 to 4 months before judging[5].

The full explanation, with photos and what to watch for, is in the minoxidil guide's shed section.

Why some people see nothing

Not everyone responds. One Filipino user wrote that after years on minoxidil his hair was "still the same" and blamed family genes[7]. Common reasons people see little:

  • Judged too early. Month two is usually the worst point, not the verdict[1].
  • Inconsistent use. The trials used twice-daily application[2]. Missed doses add up.
  • Loss continues underneath. Minoxidil does not block DHT. Men often add finasteride; see minoxidil vs finasteride.
  • Wrong diagnosis. Shedding after a fever, birth or crash diet is often telogen effluvium, which settles on its own. Check is my hairfall normal?
  • Fake product. A diluted fake cannot work. See is it legit?

How to track progress honestly

Mirrors lie. Bathroom lighting changes, hair looks thinner when wet, and you see your scalp every day, so slow change is invisible. Users who stay on minoxidil usually rely on photos[7].

  1. Take a set of photos before your first dose: hairline from the front, both temples, the crown from above and your part line.
  2. Use the same room, same light and same distance each time. Dry, unstyled hair.
  3. Repeat once a month, on the same date.
  4. Compare month 0 with month 4, not week to week.
  5. Note anything that changed: a new shampoo, illness, stress, a new medicine. These can affect shedding too.

What changes the timeline

  • Where you are thinning. Trials of topical minoxidil mostly measured the crown[2]. Results on a receding hairline are often slower and less marked.
  • How long you have been losing hair. Follicles that have been miniaturised for years respond less.
  • Strength and form. 5% grew more hair than 2% in men[2]. Foam and liquid at the same strength are similar if used correctly.
  • Consistency. Skipping evening doses because of heat, commuting or a date night adds up over months.
  • Women. Female pattern loss is also judged over months, not weeks, and a trial in women compared oral and topical minoxidil at 24 weeks[9]. See female hair loss.

Oral vs topical timing

Oral minoxidil follows a similar arc: an early shed for some, then regrowth over months. In a trial in men, oral 5mg and topical 5% gave similar results at 24 weeks[10]. Oral minoxidil needs a prescription and brings its own side effects, mainly body hair[11]. See the oral minoxidil guide.

Making it last in PH heat

The hardest part of the timeline is the middle months, when nothing seems to happen and the routine feels like a chore. Filipino users describe liquid minoxidil looking like baby oil on a hot commute[12]. A few habits help people reach month 4:

  • Apply the evening dose at least a couple of hours before bed so it dries before your pillow.
  • Use foam in the morning if the liquid looks greasy at work.
  • Keep the bottle next to your toothbrush so the routine piggybacks on one you already have.
  • Set a monthly photo reminder instead of checking the mirror daily.

What happens if you stop

Minoxidil works only while you use it. Hair grown with it is shed over the months after stopping[1]. One Filipino user said regrowth reversed four to six months after stopping[13]. Plan for ongoing use, and budget for it: Regroe 5% runs about ₱600 to ₱900 a month, imported Kirkland foam about ₱800 to ₱900 a month, and Dailys oral minoxidil ₱2,499 a month[14].
