Biotin for hair: does it stop hairfall, and who actually benefits?

Updated 27 Oct 2026Prices checked October 2026Whole scalp
Quick answer

Biotin helps hair only in people who are actually low in it, which is uncommon in people eating a normal diet[1][2]. A review of the evidence found no proof that biotin grows hair in healthy people with pattern loss[1]. High-dose biotin can also distort blood tests, including thyroid tests often ordered for hairfall, so stop it before labs and tell your doctor[3].

Why biotin became the hair vitamin

Biotin is vitamin B7. The body needs it to process fats, carbohydrates and protein[2]. Severe biotin deficiency causes thinning hair, brittle nails and a scaly rash, so it was a short step for supplement makers to sell biotin as a hair, skin and nails vitamin. In drugstore aisles and on Shopee, it is now in most hair gummies and capsules.

The problem is the jump from deficiency to everyone. Fixing a deficiency helps hair. Adding more biotin to a body that already has enough has not been shown to do anything for hair[1].

Nails tell a similar story. Biotin is often sold for brittle nails, and the evidence there is also mostly from small studies in people with a specific problem[1]. If your hair and nails both feel weak, that is a reason to ask a doctor about iron, thyroid and diet, not a reason to take more of one vitamin.

What the evidence says

A 2017 review searched for every report of biotin improving hair or nails. The cases it found were all in people with an underlying cause, such as an inherited biotin disorder or acquired deficiency[1]. It found no good trials showing benefit in healthy people, and none in pattern hair loss.

Biotin deficiency is uncommon. Most people get enough from food like eggs, fish, meat, seeds and some vegetables[2]. Groups at higher risk include people with certain genetic disorders, heavy alcohol use, and possibly pregnancy[2]. One study did find low biotin in a share of women who complained of hair loss[4], but it did not show that supplements fixed their hair.

A broader review of vitamins and minerals in hair loss found more support for checking iron and vitamin D than for taking biotin by default[5]. See iron and vitamin D.

The blood test problem

This matters because thyroid problems are a real cause of hairfall, and a distorted result can send you down the wrong path. Women in r/beautyph hairfall threads often recommend thyroid, ferritin and vitamin D checks first[6]. That advice is sound. Just do not take a high-dose hair gummy the week before.

What to check before buying biotin

Hairfall has many causes, and biotin addresses one of the rarest. Before spending on supplements, sort out what kind of hair loss you have[7]:

  • Sudden heavy lagas after a fever, dengue, childbirth, crash diet or stressful months is often telogen effluvium, which usually recovers on its own[8]. See is my hairfall normal.
  • Gradual thinning at the crown, hairline or part line is usually pattern hair loss. Biotin does not treat it. Minoxidil at about ₱600 to ₱900 a month has the evidence.
  • Thinning with irregular periods, acne or excess facial hair can point to PCOS. See the female hair loss guide.
  • Patches of missing hair suggest alopecia areata, which needs a dermatologist.
  • Broken, frizzy ends after rebond or bleach are breakage, not shedding. See breakage vs shedding.

Hair gummies and multivitamins

Most people do not buy plain biotin. They buy hair gummies or hair, skin and nails capsules that combine biotin with zinc, vitamin A, vitamin E, collagen or herbal extracts. That makes it harder to know what is doing what, and easier to double up when you also take a daily multivitamin.

More is not better for every nutrient. Too much vitamin A and selenium has itself been linked to hair loss[5]. If you take several supplements, add up the amounts on each label, or bring the bottles to your doctor. If a blood test shows you are low in iron or vitamin D, a targeted supplement prescribed for that is more useful than a broad hair blend[5].

Pregnant or breastfeeding? Biotin needs may rise in pregnancy[2], and postpartum hairfall is very common. Take the prenatal vitamin your OB-GYN recommends rather than adding separate hair products. Postpartum shedding usually settles on its own[9]; see postpartum hair loss.

If you still want to take biotin

Biotin is generally considered low risk at food-level amounts, and no upper limit has been set[2]. Many hair products contain far more than daily needs. The main practical risk is the lab test problem above. Hair gummies also often contain sugar and other vitamins, so read the label if you take other supplements.

  • Check the product on the FDA verification portal[10]. Supplements sold in the PH should carry registration.
  • Ignore before-and-after photos and regrowth promises.
  • Give any supplement a set trial period and take monthly photos, so you are judging results, not hope.

If your hair is still thinning after a few months, a supplement is not the answer. A PDS board-certified dermatologist consult costs ₱400 to ₱1,000, and can include the right blood tests. Questions people ask

Does biotin help hair growth?

Only if you are deficient. A review found no evidence of benefit in healthy people[1].

Can biotin stop hairfall?

Not unless low biotin is the cause, which is uncommon[2]. Most hairfall comes from shedding after stress or illness, pattern loss, thyroid issues or low iron[7].

Does biotin affect thyroid test results?

Yes. The US FDA warns that biotin can cause falsely high or low results on many lab tests, including thyroid tests[3]. Tell your doctor before blood is drawn.

Is biotin safe to take every day?

It is generally considered low risk and no upper limit has been set[2], but it can interfere with lab tests[3].

What vitamin deficiency causes hair loss?

Iron and vitamin D have more supporting evidence than biotin[5]. A doctor can check them with a blood test. See iron and vitamin D.
