Rosemary oil for hair: does it work for hairfall, and is it as good as minoxidil?
Rosemary oil has one small trial behind it: after six months, men using rosemary oil had hair count gains similar to men using 2% minoxidil, with less scalp itch[1]. That is promising but thin, and 2% is weaker than the 5% minoxidil most people use. It is a reasonable low-risk add-on for mild thinning, not a replacement for proven treatment, and oiling can worsen dandruff and seb derm.
What the evidence actually says
Almost every rosemary claim online traces back to one study. In a randomised trial in men with pattern hair loss, one group applied rosemary oil and the other applied 2% minoxidil for six months[1]. At the end, both groups had similar increases in hair count. Scalp itching was more common in the minoxidil group.
That is genuinely interesting. It also has real limits:
- It is a single, small trial. It has not been repeated in a large, independent study.
- It compared rosemary with 2% minoxidil, not the 5% strength that beat 2% in its own trial[2]. Matching a weaker product does not mean matching Regroe 5%.
- There was no placebo group, so we cannot tell how much of the change came from regular scalp care.
- It studied men with pattern loss. There is no trial in women with female pattern hair loss or in postpartum hairfall.
Animal and lab studies suggest rosemary extract may affect follicle blood flow and DHT activity, but lab results often do not carry over to people. For now, rosemary sits in the limited evidence group on our hair loss treatment ladder, below minoxidil and finasteride.
Rosemary oil vs minoxidil
| Rosemary oil | Minoxidil 5% (Regroe) | |
|---|---|---|
| Evidence | One small trial against 2% minoxidil[1] | Multiple randomised trials against placebo[2][3] |
| Shed at the start | Not reported | Common and temporary[4] |
| Scalp itch | Less than 2% minoxidil in the trial[1] | Common with liquids[5] |
| Safe around cats | Essential oils can be hazardous to pets; ask a vet | Toxic to cats[6] |
| Cost | [TODO: price for rosemary essential oil and a carrier oil] | ₱600 to ₱900 per month |
| Where to buy | Shopee, Lazada, health stores | Watsons, Mercury Drug |
If your loss is mild and you want to try something gentle first, rosemary is a reasonable experiment. If your hairline is clearly moving or your crown is thinning, time matters more than gentleness, because lost follicles are harder to bring back. How people use rosemary oil
Rosemary is the leading home remedy in Filipino hairfall threads, alongside coconut oil and gugo. There is no tested standard routine outside the trial. Common approaches people describe:
- Diluted essential oil. A few drops of rosemary essential oil mixed into a carrier oil, massaged into the scalp and washed out later. Never apply undiluted essential oil to skin; it can burn or irritate.
- Ready-made rosemary hair oils and serums. Sold widely on Shopee and Lazada. Check the ingredient list for the actual rosemary content.
- Rosemary water. Boiled rosemary sprigs used as a rinse. Popular on TikTok. It has not been studied for hair growth.
- Rosemary shampoos. Rinsed off in minutes, so very little contact time.
Patch test first: dab a little diluted oil behind your ear and wait a day. Stop if you get redness, burning or a rash. Keep it away from your eyes. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor before using essential oils regularly.
The seb derm warning
In Philippine heat, an oiled scalp under a helmet or on a long commute can also turn sweaty and umaasim. If you try rosemary, use a light amount at night and wash it out in the morning, rather than leaving it in all day.
Herbal does not always mean gentle. Users in r/beautyph report drying, itching and more shedding with one gugo shampoo brand[8]. Any scalp product can irritate. Our side effects hub explains how to tell irritation from treatment shedding.
Rosemary for women's hairfall
Many women reach for rosemary because it feels safer than minoxidil, especially with cats at home or worries about lifelong use[9]. That is understandable. Just know what it can and cannot do.
- Postpartum lagas usually slows on its own within months[10]. Rosemary will not speed that up, but gentle scalp care while you wait is fine. See postpartum hair loss.
- Manipis at the part line is often female pattern hair loss[11]. The proven over-the-counter option is minoxidil, which women can use as 5% foam once a day[12]. Rosemary has not been tested here.
- Breakage from rebond or bleach is a strand problem, not a follicle problem. Oil on the lengths can make hair feel softer, but it will not regrow the scalp.
If you have cats, note that concentrated essential oils can also be hazardous to pets. Store bottles closed and ask your vet before using diffusers or oils heavily at home.
Who should skip it and see a doctor
Rosemary will not help hairfall caused by thyroid problems, low iron, alopecia areata, PCOS or a recent illness. Sudden heavy lagas, patches of missing hair, or thinning with irregular periods all need a diagnosis first[13]. A PDS board-certified dermatologist consult costs ₱400 to ₱1,000. Questions people ask
Does rosemary oil really grow hair?
One small trial found similar hair count gains to 2% minoxidil after six months[1]. It has not been confirmed by larger studies.
Is rosemary oil better than minoxidil?
No evidence shows that. It matched 2% minoxidil in one trial[1], while 5% minoxidil outperforms 2%[2].
How long does rosemary oil take to work?
The trial measured results at six months[1]. Expect to wait months, not weeks, before judging it.
Can I use rosemary oil with dandruff?
Be careful. Oil on the scalp can worsen seb derm[7]. Treat the flakes first with a medicated shampoo. See ketoconazole shampoo.
Can I use rosemary oil and minoxidil together?
There are no trials of the combination. If you try both, apply minoxidil to a dry, clean scalp and keep oil to a separate time, and stop either if your scalp gets irritated.
