Derma roller for hair: microneedling in the Philippines
Microneedling with a derma roller makes tiny punctures in the scalp. In a small randomized trial, men who added weekly microneedling to minoxidil grew more hair at 12 weeks than those on minoxidil alone[1]. The evidence is early, it works as an add-on rather than on its own, and dirty or misused rollers can cause infection or scarring.
What a derma roller does
A derma roller is a small drum covered in fine needles. Rolled over the scalp, it makes many tiny wounds. The theory is that the skin's healing response releases growth signals around the follicles, and that the channels may help topical minoxidil absorb[2]. Clinics offer the same idea with motorised pens (dermapen) and stamps. The search term in the PH is usually "derma roller" or "microneedling hair".
What the evidence shows
The best-known study is a randomized pilot from India in about 100 men with pattern hair loss. One group used 5% minoxidil alone; the other used minoxidil plus weekly microneedling with a 1.5mm roller. After 12 weeks, the microneedling group had a clearly larger increase in hair count[1]. A later review found the results promising but noted that studies are small, short and use different needle lengths and schedules[2].
- It was tested as an add-on. The trial compared minoxidil plus microneedling with minoxidil alone, not microneedling on its own[1].
- Follow-up is short. We do not know how well results hold over years[2].
- Clinic and home devices differ. Trial needling was done in a controlled setting, not with a random roller from an online shop.
If you are not yet on minoxidil or finasteride, start there. They have far larger trials behind them[3][4]. See the minoxidil guide and minoxidil vs finasteride.

Buying a derma roller in the PH
Home rollers are sold cheaply on Shopee and Lazada. [TODO: price for derma roller on Shopee and Lazada]. Quality varies, and listings often do not say what the needles are made of or whether the roller arrived sterile.
- Buy a roller that arrives sealed and states its needle length and material.
- Use it only on your own scalp. Never share it.
- Clean it as the maker instructs and replace it when needles look bent or dull.
- Do not use it over broken skin, active dandruff flares, pimples or infection.
Timing it with minoxidil
Freshly needled skin can absorb more of whatever you put on it, including the alcohol in liquid minoxidil, which may sting or irritate. Ask your doctor how to time minoxidil around needling sessions rather than guessing[2]. If you live with cats, keep in mind that minoxidil is toxic to them; read the pet safety section.
In-clinic microneedling and combinations
Derm clinics offer microneedling with sterile single-use tips, sometimes combined with PRP or exosome products. PRP costs about ₱10,000 per session according to a user report[6]. See the PRP guide and the exosome guide before agreeing to a package. Ask who performs it and whether they are a licensed physician.
Clinic hard sells“I wasted 120k in Svenson and nothing happened.”
Several users describe free consults that turn into large packages with no lab tests and no doctor. A PDS board-certified dermatologist can diagnose the cause, order tests and prescribe first-line treatment for the price of a consult. Ask who will examine you and whether they are a licensed physician before paying.[7][8][9]
Home roller vs clinic microneedling
| Home derma roller | In-clinic microneedling | |
|---|---|---|
| Who does it | You | A doctor or trained staff |
| Sterility | Depends on the product and your cleaning | Single-use sterile tips at reputable clinics |
| Needle depth | Fixed by the roller you buy | Adjusted to your scalp |
| Cost | [TODO: price for derma roller on Shopee and Lazada] | [TODO: price for in-clinic microneedling session] |
| Main risk | Infection, scarring, overuse | Package upselling |
The trial evidence comes from controlled needling, not home use[1]. If you want to try it, a derm can show you the right technique once, which lowers the risk of doing it wrong at home.
Signs to stop and see a doctor
- Redness, swelling or pain that gets worse after a day or two.
- Pus, crusting or spots that look infected.
- Bleeding that does not stop quickly, or bruising.
- New patches of hair loss or scarring.
- Strong burning when you apply minoxidil afterward.
Stop rolling and see a doctor if any of these appear. The PH heat and sweat can make scalp infections worse, so keep the area clean after a session.
Realistic expectations
Microneedling will not grow back a fully bald area. In the trials it was used on thinning hair, with minoxidil, over about 12 weeks[1]. Like minoxidil itself, any gain is likely to need ongoing use[10]. If after several months you see no change, talk to a dermatologist about finasteride or other options rather than rolling harder or more often.
The minoxidil dread shed“Bakit mas lumalagas nung nag-minox ako?”
Extra shedding in the first weeks of minoxidil is common and listed on the product label. Minoxidil pushes resting hairs out so new growth can start. Most people judge results at about 4 months, not at month 2. Shedding that is patchy, painful or lasts beyond that window is a reason to see a dermatologist.[10][3][11]
Women with thinning on top can also consider microneedling as an add-on to minoxidil, though most trials were done in men[1][2]. See the female hair loss guide for the options with stronger evidence in women, and the PRP guide if a clinic offers both together.
Who should skip it
- Anyone with patchy hair loss, which needs a dermatologist's diagnosis first[12].
- People with active seb derm or scalp infection. Treat the scalp first; see dandruff and hair loss.
- People with sudden shedding after illness or giving birth, which usually settles on its own[13]. Take the hairfall self-check.
- People who bleed easily or take blood thinners, unless their doctor agrees.
Bottom line
A derma roller is a low-cost add-on with promising but early evidence, and only alongside proven treatment. A dermatologist consult at ₱400 to ₱1,000 can confirm the cause of your hair loss and set a plan[9]. Questions people ask
Does a derma roller help hair grow?
In a small randomized trial, adding weekly microneedling to minoxidil gave more hair growth at 12 weeks than minoxidil alone[1]. Evidence for microneedling on its own is limited[2].
What size derma roller is best for hair?
The best-known trial used a 1.5mm roller in a clinic setting[1]. Studies vary, and longer needles carry more risk, so ask a dermatologist before choosing.
How often should I use a derma roller for hair?
The trial used weekly sessions[1]. There is no agreed schedule[2]; your derm can advise.
Can I use minoxidil after derma rolling?
Needled skin absorbs more and may sting with liquid minoxidil. Ask your doctor how to time them.
Is a derma roller safe?
It can be when sterile and used gently on a healthy scalp. Dirty needles or heavy pressure risk infection and scarring.
